Can you… Yes. Should you… Probably not. Will you… Hell no. There's no impetus for anyone to put a piddlyass little engine in place of a slightly larger piddlyass engine. Nobody would do this… There's no reason to put an engine with LESS power in an already under powered little truck. They are different engines… Requiring different mounts and transmissions and all the stuff that goes along with them.

There are pathways to put a LARGER V-6 and V-8 engines in the truck… But why bother… The expense is HUGE unless you do it for a hobby.

A 2 l would give you enough power but you're going to have a problem the motor mounts are going to have to be modified.

You could if you really wanted to but if your on a budget even if you all ready have a good 2 litre motor I think you will find its still cheaper to replace the original motor with a like motor from a wrecked 2.3 ranger due to everything else being different.

Not easily, even though the displacements are similar, the engines are quite different the Ranger (being RWD/4WD) uses a longitudinally mounted engine and Contour has a transversely mounted engine. It would far easier to get another 2.3L or upgrade to a 3.0L/4.0L if you're going to replace the engine anyway.
