01 ford ranger starting issue. Desperate?
I have been working on my dads 01 ranger xl.
It started when he stopped to get gas and it wouldn t start. Your turn the key and nothing happens. No clicks or anything. Anyways I leant him my truck so he could get to work and me and my uncle went up to fix it. We couldn t get starter bolts loose. We noticed that the pcm fuse in the battery relay box was blown.
Few hours later we decide to jump the solenoid, it works and I get it home.
Now a week later we have replaced entire starter the truck is doing the same thing it was.
I tried to jump the solenoid again but it barely sparked and didn't engage. I have battery on the charger as the volt gauge reads close to low.
Could the pcm fuse being blown cause the circuit from completing? Thus causing no juice to not go through the starter relay fuse?
All fuses are fine except for the pcm which i believe is number six in the battery box.
Honestly if we can't figure it out, i'm gonna run a push button to the starter to last him until he trades it off this spring.
It baffles me that the truck couldn t be started unless we jump the solenoid.
You have a major short in your starting system.
The ignition switch and neutral safety switch are in the circuit to activate the starter relay. This is a separate issue from the dead battery and blown PCM fuse.
Autozone has that wiring diagram info. Register at autozone.com, put in your year, make, model & engine size, then click on repair help, repair info, chassis wiring/wiring diagrams. You can't look at the repair info without registering. This part of the diagram. Could be the relay or DTR sensor. Have you tried it in Neutral?

- Ford Ranger 4.0, 172,000 miles rough idle when starting after sitting overnight or after 2-3 hours. Starts 1st crank, idles rough 1 minute? Or so and then smooths out and runs fine. New heads and gaskets. Cleaned MAF sensor, throttle body and air intake sensor, new IAC valve, new air and fuel filters, new PCV valve. No smoke coming from exhaust and No check engine light. Any ideas what's causing this rough idle?
