In what state and year did he own the car? The way records were kept, when central computers records were created, when records are purged, etc. Will vary by state DMV.

I would guess the car was junked by 1980, so it might have never been entered into a DMV system.
It probably has been likely recycled 3 or 3 times or sitting in a scapyard in Fresno. Ask the person who he sold the car to. Maybe it is still sitting in his backyard.
