Check the transmission fluid level. You need to do this on a level surface with the engine at operating temp and running when you check the fluid level. You'll need to determine what type of trans fluid you need before purchasing it. Do not overfill the level.

Sounds like you need a mechanic your clutch plates are damaged or maybe your transmission fluid is empty

Sounds like you have a transmission problem

Taurus is how it is spelled not tourus and they have notoriously bad automatic transmissions. At 17 years old, your is shot. Time to junk that thing. It'll cost at least twice what the car is worth th rebuild the transmission.

Tranny or clutch is shot.

Sounds like forward clutch issue or Pump shaft sheared, the two halves friction pumps enough for reverse… It would depend on your mileage what you should do… Sometimes the torque converter control valve retaining clip breaks… And sticks the valve… If you're not capable of removing and repairing it yourself, you'll have to pay somebody to replace or rebuild it… The cost is in the 8+hours labor just to Remove and replace the unit so don't have a shop do a repair only…
