Opinions about ford Torino?
I'm looking to purchase a ford Torino. ICan anyone guide me on it? I've always been a big big fan of vintage muscle, with the '70 dodge challenger being my dream car, but its way too expensive. I've looked at cheaper options and the Torino attracted me most. (Power, looks, etc) can anyone guide me on it, whether it will be a good car for someone who's driven a BMW 2004 3 series for 4 years and a 2008 Mustang for 1 year? Also can you guys quote the price of a used model in mint condition? Do those cars (Torino) come in a reliable, mint condition and under 20k? I've been to a few showrooms around Philly (where I live), took a look at a couple of Torinos. Seems like a decent enough muscle. And how is it when it comes to driver feel, mpg, etc?
With a 428 or 429, the Ford Torino was a 3500+ lb car, capable of 14-15 sec quarter mile times.
A late model V8 Mustang would easily outperform it in a straight line and in the corners.
Depending on your state's emissions regulations, the main advantage may be that you don't have to perform emissions inspection for vehicles older than 1975, so you can put a lot of $$$ into the motor and make it faster. Plenty of Torinos were sold with drum brakes on all 4 wheels, you may need to upgrade to disc brakes along with whatever engine upgrades you may have planned. Generally the steering and suspension will feel less responsive than current generation BMW and Mustang with which you have had experience.
An acquaintance had one in the early 1970s. He was a hot dog so it is hard to know what the car was really like (he always ran it down). My brother drove it once and couldn't get used to the throttle - it had to be pressed down enough that it was making a pretty hard start. Trying to drive it like the roads were slippery caused it to lurch instead of start rolling. Otherwise it seemed like a decent enough car.
MPG will be **** man, it is a muscle car. As for driving it if you have never driven a manuel transmission from that long ago it will take some time to get used to as cars before like the 80's use mechanic clutches rather then hydrallic ones, so it is just harder to push down and may feel weird. As for price it is all based on the condition of the car man check cragslist and other car cites and it will giv u a general idea. Also maybe try kbb and see if you can get an estimated value.
also here is one for under 20k:

- Would like opinions on Ford Five Hundreds? How are they holding up? How well do they drive and handle? What are they getting for fuel mileage? Both AWD and 2WD's?
- Opinions about a 2007 Ford Crown Vic? Thinking about buying this 2006 crown vic. I heard the air ride suspension is a headache to fix. This seems like a good tough car, they use them for Taxi's don't they?
- Need opinions on a Ford Employer 1996? I can pick up the above SUV with 141,000 miles for $700.00. It looks and sounds fine just will need new tires. I've never bought a vehicle with high miles like this and am a little afraid of major repairs down the road. Give me an honest opinion on this SUV
- My 1976 Ford Gran Torino won't idle? When I put gas in the float bowl it will idle for like 10 sec but it won't stay running unless I give it throttle
