May car tries to turn over while the key is the accessories position. Why is that?

Car is a 1971 Ford Mustang 302 5.0 V8. I replaced all the gaskets, rebuilt the carb, had a new solenoid, voltage regulator, started, coil, timing chain, and oil pump put into the car. I'm getting a new Neutral Safety switch for the vehicle but could that be it?

Sounds like the wires to the starter are wrong.

Check adjustment or possibly change out ignition switch. Not where the key is. There's a linkage that goes down the back side of the steering column. There's an adjustment that slides slightly up or down. Check in a repair manual. There's a hole that a small pin fits in to set switch then set key at proper setting the tighten switch and remove pin.

Consider changing the ignition switch?

  • Where can I get Van Accessories? I have recently purchased a Ford Custom and I'm interested in buying some accessories to make it my own. I'm looking for someone who is selling them at a reasonable price and a s=range of products. Hope you can help.
  • Why will my car half-crank, but not turn over? I have a 2004 ford taurus, with starting problem. Its not a no start no crank, but its also not a crank no start. Its more of a half-crank no start, and the HUD is displaying a low oil pressure reading but car is full of oil. The car does a half crank then just stalls out.
  • Why is there a grinding sound when I turn over my 94 ford ranger? Just recently I started to notice my truck would make a terrible grinding sound when I turn over the key. After it turns on it runs perfectly fine. I haven't noticed anything else but that. I don't know what the problem could be.
  • 2001 Ford Ranger clicks once then won't turn over, and when key is turned off, it begins making a clicking relay noise under the dash? - 1 I've had this happen before, and the last couple times I just undid the battery and put it back in and it started right up. The battery has a charge, the alternator is new, and I tried jumping the battery just in case. So I know it's not that. I'm thinking it could be something in the ignition switch because sometimes I have to lift up on the shifter knob for it to register that it's in park and turn over. Any ideas?
