The old adage is true, there's no replacement for displacement for naturally aspirated engines. Take your example the the old 4.6 put out 310 HP and 335 Ft/lbs while the bigger replacement V8 first put out 412 HP and 390 Ft/lbs or look at the LSX 454R (7.4L) crate from Chevy putting out over 700 HP and over 500 Ft/lbs. While we can argue all day about different engine size with the inclusion of Forced Induction but the adage still stands true there's no replacement for displacement.
