How to top my oil level up?

Hi, this is probably an obvious thing to most people but it is my first car so haven't got a clue. I have checked my ford ka's oil level against min / max on dipstick. It is below the minimum. I have brought some oil, do i literally just take the cap off with the oil sign on and pour the oil in?

You put in half a litre (through the oil filler cap not the dipstick hole)

Wait a minute then take the dipstick out, wipe it, replace it then take it out again. When checking the level hold the stick horizontally to get a true level. If the level is not up to the full mark add some more oil and repeat

No, from maximum to minimum is 1ltr, do NOT put any more than a litre in as you will damage the engine.

Don't forget to check tyre pressures and condition as well.

Yes is the simple answer but do not overfill it

Make sure engine is cold. Read level of oil. IF near minimum, remove oil filler cap and pour a little amount into engine. Wait till it settles, then remove dipstick and check reading. You want the reading halfway between minimum and maximum. When you have that reading, run the engine for 5 minutes to get the new oil circulating around the system. Then, let engine cool down and check reading again. IF oil level has dropped (This is usually common), then top it up again to halfway. Only pour small amounts, like 100-200ml or so each time when topping up.

On most automobile engines, amount of oil required to raise the level from min to max is 1 quart (liter if you live in some God forsaken area). I have one engine that requires 1 gallon to go from min to max and have seen engines that require 4 gallon.
