I have an old car that is hard to start?
I was just given my grandmas car, a 1977 Ford Granada, it has a 6 cylinder motor. The car has been sitting for a while in her garage. I went to go and start it the other day and when
Update: It turns over fine has new battery. Its just that I have to keep pumping
Update 2: Ok I did fill the gas tank up, but I spoke to my aunt and she said when
It's nearly 40 years old and has not been used for goodness knows how long, on top of that it's a big 6 cylinder engine. Even in their prime they were not the best starters.
The oil will be thick and sludgy. All the seals will be dry and brittle and corrosion has no doubt built up around all the valves and piston rings. Spark plugs and HT leads will have deteriorated. Fuel wil have lost its rating.
If you can start it leave it ticking over for 10 minutes then gradually increase the revs up to 1000 and let it run steadt at that speed for another ten minutes or until the temperature gauge gets just below the red.
Do not try to over rev it or blip the throttle and if in a garage make sure the garage doors are OPEN and there's adequate ventilation.
That may help but you do need to replace all the plugs, leads, oil, filters and goodness knows what else
Simply change/sell it and buy a new one
Cars of that vintage require more maintenance = and that was also the period of tightening emission controls as manufacturers tried to find what works best. Your vehicle has a carburetor rather than fuel injection… Breaker points rather than electronic ignition… Mechanical engine controls (choke, timing advance, etc) rather than computer controls.
But still a rugged car when new. Your best bet is to find a shop that has as mechanic familiar with older car workings… Turn it over to them for a complete "go thru"… Expect little problems to pop-up for a while… It will need new spark plugs and a "tune-up" more often than a new car… Good news: parts are readily available and should not be expensive - repairs should actually be much less expensive than a newer car with fuel injection, electric fuel pump, computers, etc.
- 2000 ford taurus, is really hard to start, when it does start it idles really rough? 2000 ford taurus, is really hard to start, when it does start it idles really rough until completely warm, we replaced 4 coils and at first it helped but has returned just as bad.
- Restoring old Ford Transit. Can't get engine to start. Any ideas please? Friend is restoring 1976 Transit Diesel. Dry stored and in excellent condition. Re-conditioned injectors, clean fuel. Engine turns over valve-gear working (belt intact). Compression, fuel at injectors, no air in system engine turning over with new battery. Apparently no heater plugs on this engine (2.4). Tried eze-start just 'coughs' but will not actually start. At wits end! Any ideas please?
- I have a 1985 Nissan standard cab and I want to get a hard tonneau cover. Anybody know who made these? Anybody know what manufacturers originally made tonneaus to fit this year/model truck and if there are any truck boxes that might be similar size and fit? Maybe a new Frontier or Ford Ranger?
- How old is too old for a truck? I'm looking to buy a box truck and found a 1990 Ford E 350 with 78000 miles on it. Does it matter that it is 27 years old? The owner said I need to replace the oil and tires. What else will need to be replaced? The asking price is $2750
