How to make 79' Ford F-100 faster?
I own a 1979 Ford F-100 Custom with a 2 barrel carbureted 347 crate engine installed in it. It currently has a 3 speed automatic in it, though i'm not sure if its the original or not. Being the 3rd owner, i'm also not positive whether the differential is the original or not… But id like to invest in getting it to get up and go quicker… Anyone have any suggestions or ideas on what i could possibly do? Ex. Supercharger, turbocharger, engine/trans/diff upgrades? Also if anyone knows what kind of diff might be in it?
Differentials won't make it faster get dual exhaust if you don't have it it decreases back pressure to the engine increasing power performance air filter and intake will help a new 4 barrel performance carb would help I wouldn't turbocharge it because it's not fuel injected so it's going to be alotta extra work and parts
Are you talking about faster acceleration, or faster top speed? In both cases, the simplest upgrade would be the final axle gears. But this will only help to an extent, until you add power. If you go from say 3.55 rear gears to 4.10s, you're gonna get slightly better acceleration, but you're gonna lose overall top speed as a result. If you go from 4.10s to say 3.08s, you'll lose the "punchy" feel, but you may gain top speed. For everything you gain, you'll be giving up something else. Now you can gain acceleration speed WITHOUT losing top speed, but to do so requires more power to begin with.
The single biggest bang for your carbureted buck is gonna be a supercharger, they're several thousand dollars, but they'll boost your power/torque by 25-75% depending on how much boost you get. Other bolt ons(headers, bigger carb, intakes, ignition, etc) will be significantly cheaper, and will help some, but probably won't make as much extra power per dollar as a supercharger.
Switching from a 3 speed tranny to say a 5 speed would help pretty significantly as it would keep the engine in it's powerband more, but I'm not sure what options to do that are available for your truck.
