How much can I talk down the price of a $1500 Ford Pickup?

I've come across an ad on Craigslist for a 1981 Ford Larait f-100 pickup. It's missing the tailgate and has a small dent on the passenger fender. It has 116,000 miles on the original engine. The bench seat has a few tears and rips in it as well. He's asking $1500 for it. Now currently I have $850 cash. How much should I try talking him down? How do I do that? Is it worth even trying? Thanks!

$1500 is too much for a 1981 Ford pickup in good condition, and it sounds like this one isn't is good condition. The odometers in 1981 Ford trucks only read 5 digits, so the truck could have 16,000, 116,000, 216,000, or 316,000 miles - you don't know how many times the odometer has flipped from 99,999 back to 0. And, unless the seller is the original owner, he/she wouldn't know the real number either.

However, if this truck has a 300 cubic inch inline six, that engine is a workhorse and will run and run. It will outlast the Energizer bunny, and it's pretty easy (and fun) to work on. Plus, it doesn't fill the whole engine compartment so you have some elbow room when working on it. It's a shame that Ford no longer makes the inline six in the USA (they still made them in Australia), because it just goes and goes.

If that truck has the inline six, I could see offering a $1,000, and maybe inching up to $1,100.

They are not going to give it away. Your talking half price. 1K is as low as he will go.

Not likely to go under $1000, but if that is all you have give him a call. If nobody offers more, he may call you back.
