Ford 3000 diesel tractor cranks hard and gets hot on starter?
It cranks hard and makes a slight grinding noise. The battery posts and cables get warm while the cable connection on the solenoid and the ground on the face of the starter gets real hot.
Guesses - battery is going bad ; starter is going bad
Clean the battery terminals (both ends) to make sure the resistance isn't coming from lousy connections. If that doesn't work follow Happy Gramps suggestions - probably the starter binding up - batteries are really not likely to overheat the wires because they are going bad or are bad.
Sounds like you have bad connections to the battery and starter. Take the connections apart and shine them up. Corrosion is a high resistance connection.
- I have a 97 Ford Ranger, 4.0, in good shape, 102,000 miles and it doesn't start as well as I think it should. It cranks strong, and has new? Motorcraft plugs and fuel filter. I've cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body and the truck runs fine and there's no misfire. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I think the truck should start when I turn the key instead of having to crank 2-3 times. I've also installed a new IAC valve. Any suggestions on how to get the truck to start better?

- Can a car have a starter relay and starter solenoid? I have a 1972 Ford thunderbird and I feel like it may have a starter relay as well as a starter solenoid. On the starter motor there's a starter solenoid. I know that for sure. On the fender of the car appears to have something that resembles a starter relay. I've heard some people tell me that they can't have both but is it possible that it could be that?
