Can a car have a starter relay and starter solenoid?
I have a 1972 Ford thunderbird and I feel like it may have a starter relay as well as a starter solenoid. On the starter motor there's a starter solenoid. I know that for sure. On the fender of the car appears to have something that resembles a starter relay. I've heard some people tell me that they can't have both but is it possible that it could be that?
You are right the starter relay was separate and mounted on the fender well. The starter it's self contained the solenoid that engaged the drive gear with the ring gear.
Yes, you can have a starter relay and a starter solenoid on the starter. Yes it is redundant, but for the starter relay, the alternator's power still connects to it.
That age Fords had a relay mounted on the fender. From what I recall there was a centrifugal method of engaging the starter drive with the ring gear, like lawn mowers use. There's no magnetic engagement of the drive gear.
