Is my starter going out on my car?

Tried to start my 2001 Ford Focus SE and all I got was a clicking noise/lights on the dash. Waited a minute or two, turned it over and it started. Went out hours later and it started just fine. Could the starter be going?

Yes, it does. I have had starters do just that. However you should check for corroded battery terminals. The can also display such symptoms.

Nothing wrong with the starter motor. A clicking sound is your battery is flat and needs charging. Maybe you left your lights on and the battery ran down.

The clicking is either from a loose or dirty battery connection OR a battery that is low on voltage, which means that the battery is most likely on its last legs. Check the battery connections first before going out to buy a new battery!

There's an excellent chance it is the starter, because if it's the battery, it usually starts hard, with a "rrr-rrr-rrr" sound, then it turns over. The next step is to get the battery tested, which any auto parts store will do for free, and also check the connections.

Clean the battery posts and cables on the inside contact areas
Get the vehicle running and drive straight to an auto parts store to have the battery and charging system tested. They do that as a free service.

  • Will my abs light come on if my brake pump is going out? My 1995 ford ranger's abs light is off once I start my truck and the turns on after I roll about 20ft. And in the time before that 20ft when the light is off, if I press the brake too hard the brakes lock up. Once the light comes on braking for is basically normal

  • I HAVE A2000 FORD WINDSTAR STARTER WENT OUT REPLACED IT WITH 2 OTHER STARTERS THEY DID NOT WORK SOMEONE TOLD? I was told that the year starter was a canadan starter and is not innerchagable i would have to use motorcraft is this correct
