Fix or Get another vehicle?

I blew a spark plug out of my 01 Ford Sport Trac the other day and had it towed to my mechanic who attempted to put in a Sav-A-Thread insert into the same spark plug hole about 3 weeks ago. It'll be $2000+ to have the cylinder head removed and machined out, or more of a new head is needed. The truck has about 250k miles and was still running well. It has been well maintained but is it worth it to have it fixed? Would it be better to look for another vehicle (I'm a college student on limited income) or could I attempt to replace/fix it myself? I've done most of the maintenance myself but this job seems over the top.

Spend the money you would spend to get this fixed on something different. That's lots of miles and I don't think spending that much money on something with that many miles is worth it.

Sadfg

Have you looked online for a replacement head for that vehicle? Quite often the price a shop charges you for a part is well above the price you can buy it for yourself… That is a lot of miles BUT can you afford payments on another vehicle or?

Get a used head for a couple hundred bucks…

Find a local mechanic with a good track record.

$2,000! I don't believe that. You can get another head at a bone yard for about $100, and have it machined. Then another $200-$400 to have it installed.
For that matter you could but another Sport Trac, remove the head then sell the carcass and be out less money. I've done that to get a front clip, transmission and doors for various vehicles I have owned.

There's a guy around my area that specializes in those Ford fiasco spark plug spitting aluminum heads. I forget if he charges $60 or $100, but he doesn't take the head off. He even fixes the ones that the mechanics screw up.

Ask around. Maybe your area has such a guy. Maybe an automotive machine shop in your area would know. Ford dealerships aren't going to help you get a deal.

At 250k, it is time for a new or newer vehicle. Those new Silverados, F150s, Colorados and Tacomas look good.
