Is a face lift for a vehicle a new generation for a vehicle?

I heard that in 1989 Ford Ranger received a facelift but was a new generation or just a minor update that did not change the complete model of the vehicle?

If a car model is structurally and mechanically re-engineered it's a new generation. If there are just minor cosmetic alterations to the body or interior it's still the same generation.
