Why are my rear brake linings wearing out faster than my front ones?

I have a 2016 Ford Fiesta. It has front disc brakes and rear drum brakes and is front wheel drive. I always pull my parking brake up to its fullest extent when parking the car, as stated in my owners manual. Went in for an oil change today, and my rear linings are at 6mm whereas my front is at 10mm. What would causes this difference in wear?

Added (1). Thank you guys so much! It actually says on the paper that 2mm or more is excellent for drums and 5mm or more is excellent with disc brakes. And when I had my oil changed at 5000 miles (when the car was practically new), the rears were at 7mm. So it turns out that they aren't wearing out faster, just have lower mm since they're different types of brakes.

Drum brakes don't come with 10mm lining thickness in the first place. They probably only had 6 or7 to begin with.Normal brake bias is usually 60/40 front to rear. The front brakes do most of the work. Weight transfers forward when stopping.
I bet you replace the front brakes long before needing rears.

Possibly from driving with the parking brake on one too many times!

The rear linings start out much thinner than the front when new because they are drum brakes. 70% of your car's breaking is done by the front brakes. 6mm for drum brakes still has lots of life left in them.

The fact the car is a pos is the problem. How far have you driven it for it to need brakes all ready is it a year old yet get rid of it. The thing is nothing but rubbish. Designed to fail and waste your money.

Replace the pads/shoes when they are worn. You will just lose your head thinking about the whys and why nots.

If you are in doubt, get the rear brakes checked by a mechanic and see if the brake springs or any other parts need replacement.

Leaving the brake on when you take off.

Maybe your rear linings started out 6.5mm so front and rear would wear out at just about the same time.Using the parking brake does not wear out the shoes the way braking as you drive does. Why don't you measure the linings yourself. They could be lying to you. It wouldn't be the first time a mechanic lied about something like that. If you went in for just an oil change, what dahell were they doing messing with the brakes? My money is on they're full of it, with an sh in front. Make them show you a new brake shoe and measure the thickness.

Front brakes always wear out faster than the rear brakes. You been driving with the parking brake on?

  • Vibration/thumping in front suspension. More than likely.drivers front 2002 Ford Sport Trac Vibration/thumping. More speed, the more it vibrates, shakes, and makes the thump thump thump sound. Passenger side mirror shows no sign of movement… Drivers side mirror shakes quite a bit. No noticeable noises other than the thumping. No hard pulling to either side in steering wheel. No difference when braking. Any input would be very much appreciated!
  • How to undo bolts on Ford Galaxy 2003 Front & Rear brake caliper to renew disc's and pads? I need to renew the disc's and pads at the front and rear of Ford Galaxy 2003. I have the correct sockets and a large extension bar, but they will not budge (front or rear). I have tried WD40, thinking of trying a little heat, but its a bit near to the brake hoses. All suggestions gratefully received. I have a full workshop manual on this car issued by Ford which just says that they are tightened to 190Nm. The front bolts are huge 27mm and the rear bolts are 18mm.

  • Blew my tire, now it's facing a different direction than other ones? So, a couple of my tires have been leaking since I got the car. Its a 2008 Ford Focus. I ran over a pretty hefty curb. My tire blew. My boyfriend went to put the spare on, wasn't one in my trunk, So he grabbed his. After finally getting the car lifted, he was having a really hard time getting the nuts off. Then he realized the tire was turned. Not a lot. But my other front tire was facing straight. So what could this be? He thinks it's the steering rod.
