Where's the distributor in my truck?

From what I know, it's a part of the engine (I think! I'm very new to cars, so bear with me.) I was given advice to check the distributor cap/rotor on my truck (which I know what to look for) but I'm not sure exactly where to find it (if it even has one. Some don't, right?) I have a '92 Ford F150 XLT Supercab with a 351 5.8 V8 engine, photo attached. I would love pictures, youtube videos, Every possible detail. Just assume I know absolutely NOTHING about cars and start from there. Thank you!Where s the distributor in my truck - 1

The distributor is the round black thing with 8 fat wires coming from it, one wire going to each spark plug (4 on each side of the engine. Please don't mess with it yourself, though -- if you don't know what it looks like, it's really not a good idea for you to fiddle with it. You need a mechanic, or at least a friend with a smattering of tool experience. You can learn a lot by searching you tube for "distributor cap ford V8 engine", "replace distributor rotor, etc.

You know what to look for, really?

On fords in on the front of the engine. This particular truck it would be right in front of the intake manifold next to the throttle body. If your don't know what your doing don't mess around with it the rubber plugs on the sparks plug wires tend to break off because the rubber gets old and cracks so it's best to have a new set before messing w them. There are actually 9 spark plug wires 4 to one side of the engine and 4 to the other side and one to your ignition coil.

It's right next to the nuclear reactors

Top of the engine, either on the front or rear (driven from the cam shaft)

The cap is the plastic piece that covers the distributor and it should be clean and not scorched, and the rotor is the plastic arm thing on the inside it should just pop out. I circled the distributor in the pic.Where s the distributor in my truck - 1

No offense, but if your new to automotive, how do you even know what your looking at may or may not be an issue? Since you don't know what your looking at, how would you know if it were broken?

A 22 year old vehicle, and you have never even had to look for the distributor cap, huh?
I suppose your next question will be how much is it supposed to cost because someone's trying to overcharge you for repairs.
every ford 351, or 5.8L I ever worked on had it right in the front
straight down, behind the radiator hose, and in front of the upper intake, between the valve covers.

  • Right distributor for an engine? I have a 1978 ford Ranchero with a 351 midland in it and when I had the distributor changed my camshaft gears teeth broke so I got that fixed and then 8 months later with only putting exactly 1,067 miles into it the gears broke again and I'm pretty sure the distributor caused this because it had unusual scrap marks on the teeth so even though I might be wrong what's the right distributor for this type of engine
  • What do i need to make my truck an off road truck? I have a 2998 ford ranger. 4.0/ manual. What do i need to make my truck a good off roading pre runner? (Suspension, light, fenders)
  • Installing distributor blindly? I have a 1975 ford and I wanted to replace the distributor, I took the old one out and bought a new one. I just dropped it in randomly and tried to start the engine. After another 5 tries I got it to start and I set the timing. He car runs great. Is this ok or so I need to have a mechanic reinstall the distributor.
  • I replaced the distributor and it is firing on the right, but not on the left any sugg? I had to replace the distributor on my ford truck. Because it was shearing off. Now the truck won't start. We're getting fire on the drivers side, but not the passenger side. Any suggestions as to what we're doing wrong
