Truck popped out of gear?

I have a 95 Ford 150 truck that is a manual. In good condition, or so I thought until today. Well, today I was parked in what I thought was a flat surface at a store. (Apparently not) So I put on the parking break, which apparentlt isn't very strong and put it in first gear when it was turned off. As I was getting out, it popped into neutral and started rolling thru the parking lot. Thankfully i got to it before it hit anything. When I was home, it did it again. Only this time I didn't get out of the truck so ingot it stopped before i went thru the fence. But Sure enough, I watched it pop out of gear into neutral and start rolling. I'm a novice when it comes to repairing cars. Please be nice. Any ideas what's going on? Can't afford a new truck right now for a couple months.

The gears are probably out of sync. It's going to need to be taken apart and fix. And it's not going to be cheap. It can be upwards of $1500 to $2000.

I would say check the shift linkage. I don't think Mah Jen Boo has a clue what he's talking about. When a manual transmission pops out of gear it was never fully in gear to start with.

I think you better check your tranny & engine mounts. Broken tranny mount=slip outta gear & hit fence!
Also, A worn input shaft pilot bushing or bearing that is pressed into the center of the crankshaft can also cause this type of problem.
And it may be loose linkage as Andy said.

Ford used Mitsubishi and Mazda transmission. They used the occasional Nissan and incredibly, in the old days, Chevrolet transmissions. With that being said, your transmission sounds like one of the first 2. Shift fork and linkage could be out. But some transmissions had lockout or keeper pins ( I don't recall exact name of parts). These were very popular for wear and the consequence was popping out of gear.

But sometimes we could avoid it by locking the emergency brake, and gently pulling into an area. Because the gears, control linkage, and stick will jump back when torsion is removed, they will pop out with little persuasion when used in park. When I had my Ford or any manual for the matter, I always held the stick in gear and waited for the truck to relax in park.

This happens with trucks over 150,000 miles. If you let people barrow it, stop. They are rough housing it like cowboys. They beat it up, you cover the cost for repairs. If you are going to take it apart, you may as well get the fly wheel turned ( if you can save it) and install a new clutch. For my truck I added transmission grease to the oil, and it would shift so smooth it was like a dream. It lowers fuel consumption too.
I would place money right now on your throw out bearing making contact noise (pop!).

Just another reason to buy an automatic. As long as there's no drop shifting, they pretty much idiot proof.

It depends on weather the manual is top loaded or uses linkage, A F150 of that vintage would be a top loaded shift fork transmission and the sad part is that it would be pretty worn out if the gears can pop out and let it roll away. First off, fix your E-parking brake cable tension and then always put it in reverse on the gear box when you park because that gear will never pop out due to excessive wear over time.

Spring on the selector rail broken or weak. Put it in reverse instead. Or second. Fix the brakes. Point the wheels so they go into the kerb if it rolls on a hill.

I think you need to see a psychologist about your problem. Here's what you wrote: "As I was getting out, it popped into neutral and started rolling thru the parking lot. Thankfully i got to it before it hit anything." You write like a troll. That's what's going on.

Take the bus for a few months, then get a new truck, like you said.

Answer: What's the question?

  • I have a 2000 ford Taurus station and can't put it into gear.why can't I put it into gear? I have a 2000 ford Taurus station and can't put it into gear. Why can't I put it into gear?
  • Help truck isn't going into gear and when I let the clutch out it does? I have a 2001 standard Ford ranger. I barely had a new clutch put in last year. But anyway I was going down highway in 5th gear and as I was going to put it in neutral it made a loud popping noise and then died. So I went to the side of the road and tried starting it, nothing. It starts up fine but the minute I let off the clutch it dies and when I try to shift it into 1 3 or 5 it feels like some thing is blocking it it'll act like it goes into 2 an 3 but it doesn't engage.
  • Why my cars gear stick popping out from 1st to 3rd gear, from 2nd to 4th? The car is Ford Focus 2002 1.8tdci. Poppong out from 1st gear to 3rd and from 2nd to 4th. Reverse works fine, I'm able to start to drive car from 3rd gear with balancing clutch and acceleration. No strange noises thou.
  • Popped out bumper repair cost? Pardon if lingo is wrong, but long story short I backed into a chain link fence and now my back bumper on one side is sort of hanging loose. I pushed it back in as much as I could and it doesn't look very bad… I'm just wondering an estimate of repair cost? I drive a 2000 ford focus hatchback with a body kit
