Rear gas tank fuel delivery issue?
1988 Ford F150 XLT Lariat
Long bed - Dual tanks with switch on dash
The front tank works fine but first some reason when I switch to the rear tank it stalls out. If I leave it idling on rear tank it'll sit about 10 minutes give or take before stalling out. If I start driving, it happens within second. Previous owner said he replaced fuel pump in rear tank, not sure if he replaced the pick up strainer or not, I'd assume so. From what I can tell it has a SINGLE in-line fuel filter so I know it's not a clog or it would stall on both tanks. The gas guage for rear tank reads correctly. It's not the switch on dash. When switched to rear tank and key is turned I can hear the rear fuel pump priming for a second as it should.
Any ideas as to why the rear tank doesn't function properly? Possibly faulty wiring? Bad pump even though it's new? Clog in line? Could use another brain on this!

They should be able to help.
Hi as we're talking about what is now a 29 year old truck i'm not at all surprised it has such issues.Along with fuel all sorts of rubbish is delivered. So over such a period of time those tanks must have a lot of rubbish in the bottom of them.So a clean out and a cleaning of the filters must be essential.
Common problem. The selector valve in the fuel line is not working. If you look, there's a place along frame rail under drivers side that hoses go into. It's supposed to switch from one fuel line to the other, and they quit working. Sometimes it's just stuck, or has a small piece of dirt sticking it. I'm fighting one right now on a 1989 diesel. I don't think new selector valves are available anymore. At least wasn't when I checked.
Sounds like debris in the tank getting sucked up on the pick up screen. I'll bet if you turn the vehicle off for 5 minutes and try driving again you'll go for a while before it happens again. The debris fall off off the pump screen when the motor and fuel pump is not running. If that's not it the supply line had a restriction in it.
Yes
This happened to my uncle's RV. The fuel selector valve went bad and he could only get fuel from one of the tanks. He installed the new valve fairly quickly and he was back on the road. These 1988 F150 selector valves are available on Ebay for ~$60 with free shipping but you will pay a lot more if you buy it locally.

- Why won't the gas in my fuel tank go in the carburetor? 1984 Ford F-150 302 5.0 Automatic? I have put a new fuel tank, new starter, new battery, new fuel lines, the fuse is good for the fuel tank. I have at least a 1/4 of a tank in the fuel tank, i can only get it to run if i put gas directly into the carb, it won't flow from the furl tank to the carb. What should i do?
