Is it illegal to not have airbags in my truck?

Ok my truck was manufactured without airbags. It was made in 1991-92. I know I can't put airbags in it, but is it illegal. I was told by one of my friends the acted like it was illegal, I also have a windgate on it and the acted like it was dangerous to have it. Also My sister is also arguing with me that my truck is made out of aluminum and not steel. Its a 92 ford f150 can someone debunk that.

I think so

A stock 1992 F-150 should be legal to drive in general - there are many still on the road. However, there may be additional requirements depending on what you use the truck for. One example would be if you use it as a taxi.

Airbags can't be retrofitted. It could crush your body if you put the wrong one in. They do not make trucks out of aluminum. At most, the engine block is aluminum, but they would sleeve the cylinders with steel.

As for debunking your sisters claim. It should be simple. If the truck were made of aluminum a magnet would not stick to it. It will to sheet metal though.

Your truck is legal if it was manufactured legally at that time. These is no requirement that old stuff be updated. You are accepting the increase risk by owning the older vehicle, by your choice. Same for modifications you make to your truck. However, there are some modifications that are illegal from a public safety point, and the cops will warn you to not use public streets. Followed by a ticket the second time. Like giant tires that make the vehicle unstable at highway speeds. Aluminum is still used in current vehicles, check it out.

I don't know

No. Its was illegal to build a NEW car/truck beyond a certain model year without airbags, but not to drive a vehicle without them. The same way my friend's classic Corvette Stingray is perfectly legal.

Made of steel and putting an airbag in when you are not a manufactor means death from a bump in the road.

Of course it's steel. Test it with a magnet. Stop at your gas station that does vehicle inspections. They will tell you that if it was made with airbags it has to have them still. If it's older than that you don't have to have them.

No. You have a vintage vehicle. Modern manufacturing standards do not apply.
