I hear air blowing out of my air intake, when I trie to start my 96 Ford F-150?

Me and a friend recently replaced the head on my 96 Ford F-150, straight 6. The old head cracked cause it ran hot. When we trie to start it, it sounds good like its about to start but stops when air blows out of the air intake. The distributer was not removed and the plug wires and spark plugs are right, baterey is good. What did we do wrong? Why will it not start?

Valve lash set too tight. Recheck each and every one. Its likely the lifters were bled down when doing your rebuild giving a false reading on the lash. Then, when you cranked it over the lifters pumped up, holding some valves open constantly.

Your timing is off.
