How to make truck last through college?

I have an 05 Ford F-150 with 260,000 miles. It has a rebuilt motor though, the old one was destroyed by the other owner who didn't change the oil. I put a new motor in at 238k. Truck runs great now. I'm a senior in high school and next year I have college and will be on a super strict budget. I really don't want to buy a different car, but to keep my truck to last me through college and then maybe some? I'm already good at oil changes (every 4,000). But anything else I can do to make it last a lot longer?

Keep them keys in YOUR pocket always.

Mostly it depends on very quick timing on replacements at this age. But a mechanic could tell you it'll cost a car to repair today. Growls - power steering is gone. Squawks on stops - brakes are gone. Bounce noise - struts are dead. Shaky car on idle - air conditioner needs flushing. Be sure to listen up to your car on the go. A $250 brake job goes $1,000 if you ignore it on time.

Don't be like the previous owner, and skimp on the maintenance.

You know the old engine failed mostly because of lack of maintenance. So that suggests the best thing is to keep on top of that. Budget your regular servicing into your budget. Also, drive the truck carefully, and limit the miles you drive. Don't to pointless road trips and show off to your buddies.

With a new engine there's no reason that truck can't go another 10 years. You will need to do some routine repairs in that time of course, but just look after it to minimise that.

Keep the car and check this: Change transmission oil every 60k with redline or royal purple, change motor oil with royal purple with a K&N oil filter(you save money because you can change it every 10k-15k miles depending on the car). Also keep some money around incase a seal leaks. I learned how to work on my car because money was extremely tight, it will save you in the long run.

  • Which of the three truck company's last the longest? Ford, Chevy, or GMC? I'm 18 and my dad is getting me my first vehicle and wants me to drive a truck. Here in Texas drivers are a little crazy, lol. He's looking into trucks that are between the 10k-20k range. Which of the three last longest?
