2013 Ford F-150 towing capacity?
I would like to get a camper(my fiancé works on the road), but don't want to go over my limit. I know my maximum trailer weight is 7,500 lbs but my GCWR 13,500 lbs and the truck weighs 7,750 lbs. Which means I can't haul anything over 5,950 lbs right? So if I found a camper that s dry weight is 4,956 lbs but it's GVWR is 6,600 lbs I can't tow it right? Or can I since it's dry weight is under 5,950 lbs? I'm obviously new to this and want to make sure I do it right. Thanks in advance. Also, if anyone has any suggestions on a lightweight camper I can actually haul that has an oven, I would appreciate it.
I'm just throwing numbers here and making them round for the sake of convenience. Lets say a guy had a 10'000 lb. Trailer gross weight with all the camping supplies and sleeping bags, water everything in it.
sitting there by itself it weighs 10,000 lbs.
Lets say you and your friend can pick up the tongue of trailer. So it weights 400 pounds. That means 9600 pounds is on the trailer's axle. The tongue weight of 400 pounds is then added to truck. Not the total trailer weight.
A Camping trailer will have a stem jack since tongue weight is more than 400 pounds but do get the idea now? You buy a 7000 pound trailer and 500 pounds of gear in it for 7500 pounds. The manufacturer is going to tell you tongue weight. If it's used, get the serial number and model number off the tag and call the trailer manufacturer and they can tell you tongue weight (dry).
so if all your added gear is over the trailer axle and not at the front of it, you won't be adding tongue weight. Only the tongue weight is added to the axle of the truck.
so your 7500 pound trailer with everything in it has an axle weight of 6500 pounds and a tongue weight of 1000 pounds that is added to truck weight.
you can go to any truck stop and use the truck scales to verify a load. It will tell you trailer axle weight, drive axle weight and front axle weight.
Yes some of tongue weight will be distributed forward onto the front axle of the truck. By adding front axle weight and drive axle weight you determine truck weight and then your trailer weight for gross weight.
No, Sparky, YOUR Ford F-150 DOES NOT weigh 7750 pounds. In fact, I would be amazed if it weighs much more than 4000 lbs. If you are reading the numbers from the placard (sticker) on the driver's door frame, the GVWR is the GROSS Vehicle Weight Rating, which is the MAXIMUM weight your truck is designed to carry, and that includes the total combined weight of people, fuel and any cargo you might put in the bed of the truck.
Your MAXIMUM TOWING capacity is 7500 pounds, and your GROSS COMBINED Weight Rating (truck AND trailer together) should not exceed 13,500 pounds.
So, considering these numbers, you CAN tow a trailer that has a GROSS (maximum) weight of 6600 pounds, but just remember that the LESS weight you have to tow, the better your fuel mileage will be, and it will also be less strain on the truck that's doing the towing. A properly balanced trailer will put 10-15% of the total trailer weight on the hitch.
If your truck does not have a factory towing package, then I would strongly suggest you have an auxiliary transmission cooler installed. You'll also need a brake controller to make the trailer brakes work properly, and a load equalizing hitch for the trailer.
Towing weight is the truck and whatever your towing combined so if its 7500 pounds you can't go over that
Your vehicle weight (empty weight) between 4,685 to 6,113 lbs.So with a GVWR of 13,500 you can tow anything between 8815 and 7387 gross weight with trailer brakes. I believe with a 13.500 towing weight you have a 4x4 with towing package and 5.4L or better, make sure you are reading the towing capacity correctly for YOUR vehicle.
I have a 2010 with 5.4 crew, towing package and it is only rated for just under 12k lbs
Without knowing the exact configuration of your truck, I can't give you an exact answer
You can, however, find the information you need here

If you have questions about your truck specifications, the parts department at your local Ford dealer can run the VIN and give you the answers you need
