Why is my car doing this?

I own a 2002 ford explorer xlt with 164k on it and when I drive on the highway for more than about 15 minutes it will not go past 3000 rpm and will not downshift. Also, when I try to go past 3k it will clunk and grind, even when off the highway on regular roads it will clunk (only after going on the highway). Oil is fine, can't access trans oil as it needs a special machine and has no dipstick. Any thoughts?

Well, I would say that it is a piece of junk, so unload the clunker!

  • Why can't Ford have the same quality as Toyota does? What are they doing wrong? I have to drive and maintain a Ford for work. Constant wiring, fuel pump relay, gaskets, water pump, and other issues. Many Toyotas are problem free other than maintenance. How does this happen?
  • Why is my car doing this? - 1 When i have the car 1994 ford taurus jacked up, if i spin a wheel clockwise the other wheel turns counterclockwise. Sorry i forgot to mention that is is the front wheels that do this. The car does not roll at all when it is on the ground.
  • Am I doing the mile per tank math wrong? I have a Ford Taurus 2002 and it's in bad shape, I know that. The internet says it should have 18 gallon tank and 20 mpg city. My math would be 18gallons X 20miles=360 miles for the tank before needing a refill oif all good. But I figured I've driven about 78 miles the last 3 days and have had to put in about 42 gallons of fuel in it. Am I doing the math wrong or do I really only get 1.85 miles per gallon from the car (78miles/42gallons=1.85mpg)
  • I just bought a 1990 Ford Ranger and it is doing something weird? As stated in the title I bought a 1990 Ford Ranger today and it had recently gotten some parts replaced including: Fly Wheel, Starter, tires and some others. But the problem is, when I'm stop and accelerate the whole truck shakes and jiggles and I'm not exactly sure what it is? Any comments help. It's a Ford Ranger 1990 Automatic 4wd. Also, I'm not sure if this is normal on these old of cars but when on the freeway going about 65 that's red lining it.
