Where is the starter soleniod located on a 1999 ford explorer xlt?
My explorer won't turn over, crank or start.it just a click sound.is it the soleinoid or could it be the starter that s bad?
The solenoid is either attached to the starter, or on many Ford vehicles there's a starter relay located near the battery.
It is part of the starter. Clean or replace the battery terminals. Get a jump. Explorer starts, get the battery charged and load tested. No start, get the battery charged and load tested. With a good battery on the vehicle, get a test light and connect it to battery negative. Check for power (test light should light up) at the two terminals of the starter solenoid with key on Start. Power is good, connect test light to battery positive. Check for a good starter ground by touching starter body with key on Start. Power and ground are good with key on Start and the vehicle does not crank, the starter is bad. The solenoid is part of the starter and is replaced as one assembly.
If the solenoid clicks, it's getting power and working. Sounds like you have a weak battery. But if you suspect the starter, it can sometimes be persuaded to work if you give it a gentle tap with a hammer (use a socket extension bar if you can't reach it). If that's the case you need to change the starter. But before spending any/big bucks, charge the battery. Enough power to light up a few bulbs on the dash doesn't mean enough power to turn over your mighty Ford donk fast enough for it to fire.
Hi so why blame the poor old solenoid. When it is about lack of power in the battery. Yes the battery is old and needing replacement.
If the solenoid is mounted on the starter motor just go buy a rebuilt starter from Advance Auto.
If the solenoid is mounted on the firewall or fender and not on the starter motor jump the 2 large terminals to see if the starter motor still works.
If it does work just replace the solenoid.
It COULD be just a dead battery. If you don't know what you're doing, DON'T DO IT! Get your truck to a REAL mechanic who can inspect and determine the cause of your problem, and fix it right the first time.
Maybe on the passenger side fender.
Always check the easy things first. In this case that is the battery, they go bad far more times than the starter solenoid. Batteries have a limited life of abut 4 years max. How old is your battery.
- Ford Explorer XLT - Sport Appearance Package, vs Ford Explorer Sport? I'm currently leasing a XLT sport appearance package and wanted to know what the price difference would have been and what features I would get, If i would have just gone with the sport.
- Can a car have a starter relay and starter solenoid? I have a 1972 Ford thunderbird and I feel like it may have a starter relay as well as a starter solenoid. On the starter motor there's a starter solenoid. I know that for sure. On the fender of the car appears to have something that resembles a starter relay. I've heard some people tell me that they can't have both but is it possible that it could be that?
