What's wrong with my SUV?

My Ford Explorer is 2003. It has a new battery and starts up great. However once in a while just dies. I have had it checked and alternater is good and no codes came up. Can anyone tell me what it could be. I depend on this vehicle for work and my kids.

Does it JUST die quickly ( electrical) ? OR does it sputter and then die in 20-30 seconds ( gas flow ) ?

Did they check for Vacuum Leaks, Ground Connections, Clean the MAF, Check, clean and grease the Crank and Cam Sensor connections? Dielectric Grease assures a good connection. Also called Bulb or Silicone Grease. When it stalls you either have no Spark or no or contaminated Fuel. Changing your Fuel Filter is never a bad idea.

I would think you have a broken ignition wire, or faulty chip.
When the wire separates the engine dies, Look for a singed wire sheath, where the current is arching (jumping the gap).
If the chip is cracked and heat causes expansion, the break in the circuit causes the system to die.

You need a specialist, Auto Electric Tech, to diagonals it.

Clean the throttle body - same kind of thing happened to my wife's Murano and it fixed it right up.

If it dies at a stoplight or when braking, then I'd lean to a bad or dirty IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) which is used by the PCM/computer to control idle speeds and for starting to allow airflow into the engine at closed throttle. A dirty or defective IACV can often cause stalling and won't trip a CEL light or trouble code.

Given the age of the truck, it's likely due to be cleaned/tested along with cleaning the MAF and throttle body which can get dirty over time and affect starting, idle, and performance. At least, those items should be cleaned as part of normal maintenance and if the stalling trouble persists, then look elsewhere at possibly vacuum leaks or a bad/sticky EGR valve, bad Crank or Cam sensors/ connections, etc. And further testing. Might also be time for a tuneup and change fuel/air filters if never done/due.

Clean the throttle body.
When were the spark plugs changed the last time?
The idle air control motor may be bad if it stalls at stop signs.

  • Small SUV for teen driver? I'm only 15 now, but my mom told me I should start researching cars and SUVs. We have agreed on Nissan Rouges, Subaru Foresters, and Toyota RAV4s (possibly Honda CRVs) NO OLDER THAN 2009… My mom drives a Subaru and really wants me to get the Forester. The problem is, Foresters are more expensive than any of the others. They are all about the same size, same mpg. What would you recommend of the four? Which is the best for a new driver? Any other suggestions? (No ford, Chevy, jeep, etc.)
  • Mazda cx5 ( suv crossover ) or normal car ( like a hatchback? I'm turning 18 next year and my parents are gonna buy me a car. Now I wanted a hatchback for a while. Thinking along the lines of a hyundai i20, ford fiesta etc. But I came to look at suv crossovers and decided on the 2014 mazda cx5. And while it sounds childish, the opinions of my friends do matter somewhat, with them saying I shouldnt get a big car right now ( even though it isn't that big). What should I choose?
  • Pictures of 2 inch wheel spacer on a Suv? Was wanting to get wheel spacers for my 05 ford explorer. Can't decide to go with a 1.5 inch or a 2 inch. Does anyone have a picture or could find one for me of a suv with a 1.5 or 2 inch wheel spacer. Greatly appreciated.
  • Is the ford explorer SUV considered a low-income car or higher class? When you drive the ford explorer SUV, are you considered lower income with just maybe high school education in people's minds or are you considered upper class with it? Here's the type I'm talking about, Ford explorer V8 XLT. What's your opinion? After giving the opinion on the explorer. Would it be the same for the expedition and the escalade SUVs? Aren't SUVs usually regarded as expensive cars?
