The trans gets overworked and overheated and you could seriously damage the transmission.

You will probably only get to about 40 mph and kill the transfer case slowly.

You'll be bouncing off the rev limiter before you get to highway speed. Also the drivetrain will be under significant centrifugal force.

First of all, 4X4 low is geared too low for highway speeds. 4X4 low is designed for getting out of mud, snow and other type of terrain without spinning your wheels and digging in deeper. It is not designed for the road. It is also good for pulling, such as you would do if you were trying pull a stuck vehicle free using a tow strap or chain!

No matter how hard you push on the gas, the vehicle will not go very fast do to the gearing! In 4X4 low you would be lucky to get to 15 mph.

  • Suspension creaking/moaning over bumps or breaking at low speeds? My 2004 Ford falcon has a bad moaning/creaking sound come from the front left of the car when going over small bumps or breaking what could this be?
  • How is fording a river in a manual 4x4 different to an automatic 4x4? I had forded a river with a LR Defender before and usually stuck it in Low 2nd gear and push through the river at 2-3k rpm. Luckily I never got stuck in the middle but I remember reading somewhere that it is easier to ford rivers with an automatic gearbox due to the lack of clutch housing? Since automatic gearbox won't really stall in the middle of the river, would it be okay to shift it in reverse if stuck?
  • How to fix low drive on my Ford F150 if the 4WD knob is broken? I got stuck in a ditch today and I got using 4L. The knob to select it was broken when i tried to turn it to 4L, I looked in my truck and found pliers which I used to turn it. When I pulled out of the ditch I used the pliers to turn it but it wouldn't move. My friend gave it a try and he turned it but the dash lights flickered then went off and it said we were still in 4L then the "low drive" light lit up. How do i fix it?
  • What happens if you use the same bottle you put gas in to put water in your radiator? I accidentally used the same bottle I put gas in to put water in my 99 Ford Explorer radiator and now it's been over heating non stop, I'm on the side of the highway now. The water comes out brown and gooey and I bought Prestone Flush+Cleaner, twice I followed the steps and it still overheats and the brown gooey stuff, oh yea and I'm not sure if this is bad but there's white smoke coming out of the exhaust
