99 ford explorer fuel gauge stopped working?

So I've been doing some research on this, but I just need to hear a few more opinions. I have never had any problems with my fuel gauazge until now. My Explorer has 232k miles on it, and I keep the matienence up on it regularly.

So I put 40$ in the car, it was a little les than a quarter full. I've driven 110 miles since then, and the gauge hasn't really moved since then. It will fluctuate, if I drive over hills and what not, but it will not drop velow half a tank. I puy ten more dollars in it today, and it moved up to about three quarters of a tank, but within ten miles, it dropped back down to the halfway mark again. I'd really like to try and fix this myself, but I need a good starting point.

It sounds like your gauge is working. Keep in mind there should be a anti-slosh module on the back of the instrument cluster. It looks like a small circuit board that plugs into the back and this controls the sloshing action of the fuel so that the fuel gauge doesn't fluctuate so much. It could be this small circuit board or the sending unit.

I would put the vehicle on level ground and siphon all gas from the tank. If the gauge goes to empty chances are the sending unit is working and your fluctuations may be the anit slosh module behind the cluster.

Sounds very much like the sending unit is bad. Unfortunately, its located inside the fuel tank with the pump so the fix means pulling the unit. Its doable by a DIYer if you have the tools and skill. Instructions can be found at many sites on the web and even videos on YouTube.

  • Rpm gauge not working normally? I have a 2004 Ford Freestyle and I noticed today my RPM gauge has been acting funny. When I turn the car on, rather sitting just above 0 it is sitting at one. When I start to accelerate it would normally go up to a 2 but instead it is going to almost 3. It is an older car with 150k miles on it. I'm not car savy in any way but I want to know what could possibly cause this and if it will be an expensive fix or not.
  • My gas gauge isn't working right? 2001 ford ranger 3.0 manual 2wd. My gas gauge is fluctuating but it doesn't really correlate to how much gas is in my tank. I'd say that it goes between 1/4 and 5/8 most of the time. What should i check? How do i check it? Is there anyway i can read the voltage on the sending unit to see if its good? I'm out of ideas
  • 1996 ford ranger gas gauge not working? Alright… My gas gauge sets right at the top of the E when moving, but when i turn the vehicle off, it will read right under the quarter tank line, than right back to E when it gets turned back on. Would this lean more to the sending unit in the tank or a bad gauge? Fuse is good. Figured i would rather ask before trying either option.
  • 2008 ford focus se transmission stopped working, lost power steering, and yellow engine light went on? I checked under the hood and everything looks fine. I started it back up and it ran fine and the engine light was no longer on. Should i be worried?
