2003 Ford Explorer 4x4 4.6L V8 oil change?
I have a 2003 Ford Explorer 4x4 with the 4.6L V8 with about 137000 miles and it's due for an oil change and its the first since I have owned it but I do not know what the previous owner used. The manual tells me to use 5w20 but I have been told its probably better to use 10w40 because of the mileage but I don't know if this is true. Also full synthetic vs synthetic blend? Best brand?
TIA for responses!
Go with the manufacturers recommendations on 5w20, but choose a high mileage oil. Most oil companies make a high mileage oil. In all honesty, in a Ford with that many miles, other components will go before the engine does, just maintain oil changes and the engine will outlast other things on the suv.
Split the difference and go with 10W30. Forget the synthetics unless you live where it is very hot or very cold there a waste of money.
Making the assumption the previous owner/owners used what was recommended by Ford, the 5w20, and the vehicle has gone 137k why would you want to change? My take is don't argue with success. Generally speaking unless you drive where conditions are extreme the synthetics aren't going to make much difference except to lighten your wallet a bit more.
- My buddy has a 99 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 that is leaking oil from rear passenger wheel. Any ideas on why? The brake cover is not pushed all the way against the hub. There's a half inch gap between them. Don't know if that has anything to do with it. So it has nothing to do with the wheel bearing?
- 2000 ford ranger 3.0 4x4 oil pan gasket replacement? What's it take to change? Step by step guide would be helpful. Personal tricks of the trade. What specific tools I need. Can I drop the pan enough to clean off old gasket and slide new one in? Evening day or all day or weekend project.
- Oil pressure - in my dashboard - CAR OIL CHANGE -? Hi i'm getting the below message in my dashboard. Mine is a 10 yrs old ford card LOW OIL PRESSURE. could the above be due to ENGINE OIL due to be replaced. Or oil gone old or bad. i jut recently changed oil - its a 5k miles synthetic oil.
- How is fording a river in a manual 4x4 different to an automatic 4x4? I had forded a river with a LR Defender before and usually stuck it in Low 2nd gear and push through the river at 2-3k rpm. Luckily I never got stuck in the middle but I remember reading somewhere that it is easier to ford rivers with an automatic gearbox due to the lack of clutch housing? Since automatic gearbox won't really stall in the middle of the river, would it be okay to shift it in reverse if stuck?
