Rear differential gear oil is black?
My wife's Ford Expedition all wheel drive 2001. We bought it a year ago. When turning it feels and sounds like tire is rubbing but it isn't. I've checked the fluid in the rear differential it's really black with lots of metal shavings. Can I change the fluid or leave it alone?

You should change the oil, it is no good the way it is.
Change the oil and if it's a limited slip differential you must use a friction modifier specifically designed for "LSD"!
(limited slip differential) you can check the door sticker code to see what axle you are equipped with. You can also block front wheels and jack both rear wheels off the ground. Place transmission in neutral and then spin one tore. Does the other tire spin in the opposite direction? (conventional differential, no modifier necessary) does the other tire spin the same direction? ( LSD, modifier necessary)
If the problem continues then you've got problems. Worn clutch pack or possibly side gear wear or breakage!

LSD DIFFERENTIALS WILL DO THE TIRE RUB THING YOU SPEAK OF WHEN THE OIL IS WORN OUT OR IF THE WRONG OIL IS USED. GET THE PROPER WEIGHT OF "HYPOID GEAR OIL FOR THE VEHICLE AND USE THE FRICTION MODIFIER IF NECESSARY. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE THE FRICTION MODIFIER WILL HURT A CONVENTIONAL GEAR ASSEMBLY So IF NOT SURE JUST ADD THE FRICTION MODIFIER!
Changing to black is what happens over time.
The concern should be the metal shavings.
Whatever part they came from is worn/damaged.
You can change the oil, but that part or bearing aint gonna fix itself.
I never went by color but mileage is a clue. Look in the owners manual for when it should be done. I have to believe that it is not the standard gear oil but a high viscosity synthetic.

I heard that gloss shows every little imperfection (scratches) while with matte black, you can't wax them. - Cost for a rear differential gear swap? Very simply I have a 2012 Ford Mustang V6 with the stock 2.73 gears and I ordered 3.73 gears and I wish to have them installed. My local auto body shop is asking $1000 for the installation + gear oil + engine retune (apparently that s needed when you jump gears like that). Is that a fair price or should I look elsewhere?
