Transmission grinding gears?

So my 2001 Ford escort zx2 is grinding gears only when put into second gear but it only grinds inbigher rpm. When driving around town and shifting between 2500 and 3000 rpm everything is fine. No grinding but sometimes when I want to pass someone and shift from first to second gear between the 4500 and 6000 rpm range that is when the gear will grind but its only second gear. No other gear grinds. If I down shift from third to second it still doesn't grind. Only when going from first to second gear. Could the synchronizer has gone bad and maybe needs to be replaced or is it a different issue? What could be the problem?

Yea the synchro or maybe the clutch is dragging just a bit cause 1st and second always have a tighter gear than 3rd 4th or 5th so it tends to get spooled up a bit more and then throw in a loose synchro and bam grinding gears I would say go to a parts yard take a low milage car THATS CLEAN AND WRECKED cause that means an adult probably owned it and got hit take the trans and buy a new clutch Please… AND replace yours the trans will run you 200 to 350 for a good one and s clutch.kit… Shouldn't be more than 200 but buy a bit better one like luk or exedy look all around on line they go for anywher from 60 to 275 for the same exact kits one site to the next good luck also try new gear oil first and get the good stuff it's worth it

Gear shift cables stretched, the hydraulic clutch is leaking fluid transmission side cover shifting forks are worn.

Sounds like a tooth broke off your synchro try double clutching 2nd gear its a pain in the @ss but it will stop grinding until you get it repaired as your going faster your main gear cluster is spinning faster the broken tooth is a low spot so naturally thats were it will try to mesh first by double clutching it will mesh on a different part of your synchro gear
