Tow place wants more than car's worth to get plates back?

My sister wrecked a ford escort is Delaware a month ago and now we need the plates, which she should have taken from the crash. I live in Pennsylvania and need the plates back to send in to the DMV. The two place wants 1500 dollars for storage to send the plates back. There's no way that i'm paying that much for a car that was worth 1900 dollars and now sits destroyed. How much will the fine be for not returning the plates to the state? And the insurance was canceled a few days ago so, and I think the time on a car not having insurance and sending the plates back is 30 days.

You should have made arrangements with the tow yard to pay your tow bill before when the accident happened. Instead you chose to abandon the car, and stiff the towing company for the money owed them. Now when you need the plates, the tow company is not willing to assist you in any way.

You may be able to get PA to cancel the tag, especially if you have a police report showing the accident. You may be liable for the non insured vehicle fines up to the time those tags expire.

Sorry but I have no sympathy for you. The tow company provided a service to you, and has been storing the car in a lot that costs them to keep, and you seem to think that they should just give you the tags and take the loss. If you had contacted them promptly, you most likely could have settled up by paying the tow bill and giving them the title to the car so they could junk it. Now you have to pay one way or another

My dad took my plates off when my car was totaled at a junk yard where they towed it. They wouldn't let us have them. He just ripped off a piece of paper and wrote my license pate on it and put it on the dash

Start by calling the DMV and ask how they handle situations where the plates are lost, stolen or otherwise unavailable. It might be as simple as signing an affidavit that you no longer have possession of the plates.

However, be aware that if the the tow company has provided you a service by towing and storing your car, then you legally owe them for their services. It doesn't matter how much your car is worth, or whether you ever take it back in your possession, they deserve to be paid for their service just like you deserve a paycheck from your job regardless of whether or not the company is able to sell the product or service you produce.

If you don't pay the tow company sooner or later they can sue you (or whoever owns the vehicle) and they will win. They provided a service, you must pay for the service. Its that simple. If you have insurance then the insurance company should pay the charges and tow the car to their own storage facility or scrap yard to avoid any additional charges, but if there's no insurance then this is part of the risk you chose to take when you chose to drive with less than full coverage. This bill won't just go away because you get the DMV to scrap the car without getting the plates back.

Tell them the plates have been stolen by some towing nutbag… I would not pay them a dime…

  • What happens if I make more than one payment per month on my car from Ford? I want to ferociously pay my car loan off as soon as possible. My car payment from Ford is due every 15 of every month, but I was wondering if I could make more than one payment per month. Lets say if I make 6 payments in one month of 100 dollars on top of the monthly payment due on the 15 of every month, is that allowed by ford, or do they charge a fee for making extra payments on their car loans?
  • Is a dealership the best place to get my car repaired? I have a 2014 Ford vehicle that I haven't even had for a year yet. Someone rear ended me and now I have to take it in to repair the damage. The other persons insurance is covering the cost. Since the car is not even a year old, I want to make sure that I get OEM parts installed. Is taking it to the Ford Dealership my best bet or will I be fine taking it to a respected independent? I just want to make sure I get it back the same way it was before.
  • If a New car cost more than your home why buy it? I have a house that I own outright. And it cost me around $30,000 and a New car from the Ford dealer will cost me about $35000. Why buy it? Isn't car just suppose to get you from point A to point B and back to point A?
  • How do I get my conversion back seat/sofa bed back into seat position if switch stopped working? Is there a way to do it manually? Want to put my Ford Econoline conversion sofa back into seat position but my switched stopped working. I have not tried to do it manually yet. Is it possible though?
