Scared to drive my car to work? 1996 ford escort?

I just started work yesterday and today is my second day. Ever since my car broke down 5 months ago, i've been scared to drive it. Some stupid mechanics were "fixing" it at the time and took about a month. I don't even know why. They didn't fix **** and all I needed to do was replace the battery. So now, i'm afraid to drive my car because lately it's been shaking and i have a check engine light. I'm not irresponsible. It's just, i can't get the money right now to take it to a mechanic. I'm scared shitless if i drive to work and then it breaks down… On my second day or third day at work.

I'm not great at managing cars but I really want to make sure my car is stunning and always in main condition. Any tips and advice? I know I have to get rid of that engine light… My step dad told me it was okay and that maybe i need an oil change… I put oil in it but i guess it's completely different.

I'm also having trouble trusting a mechanic. I'm not even sure where to take it because i've seen videos where mechanics do the wrong thing or has done something terrible worst…

The check engine light means something happened that the system recorded, but that does not mean it is a real problem. So take it to a place like Autozone and let them download the codes for free. With the codes, then we can tell you if it is serious or can be ignored.
A car needs to be driven daily for optimal performance.
Oil changes are easy and you could learn how to do them.
Or get a friend or relative to do it for you.
