I have a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2. Today, the Check Fuel Cap light came on. What does this mean and what should I do

It means the fuel cap on your Ford no longer has its integrity and needs to be replaced.

Any auto parts store will have a replacement for you.

Remove cap and reinstall.
Hearing two "CLICK"
sounds as verification.
On ignition if light returns
the problem is a sensor
fail at the cap. Check
owner's manual to see
if it recommends you
to do the repair.

Go make sure the fuel cap is put on correctly if it is that means it's telling you that the gasket is worn out and that you need to go buy a new fuel cap for the car

It means the sensor that measures pressure in the tank is sending a signal that the electronics in the car interpret to mean there's a problem with the cap.

Could be a missing, loose fitting, or damaged cap, or it could be a failing sensor or associated wiring.

Did you check the fuel cap?

Fuel cap is loose. Tighten it. Light does not go away, replace the cap.

If you didn't leave the fuel cap at the last gas station you need to remove the gas cap and check the filler neck for rust build up. If it's rusty use a scotch brite pad to remove the rust.
A bad charcoal canister vent valve will also make the check gas cap light come on.
