Should I replace airbags in my 2001 Ford Escape?

I have a delimma. We bought a used 2001 Ford Escape about 7 months ago. The car was in great condition. Run well and mileage was great. We had no problems. Recently my car was in a crash. The damage isn't bad. It mostly swiped a divider. Majority of the damage is under the front left wheel. It appears to be no damaged done to the engine, transmission, etc. Just the left wheel. Both of the airbags deployed. I'm wondering if the cost to fix the wheel and replace the airbags is worth the money or if we should purchase a new car. Honestly I can't afford to buy another car even if it's $5000 because we just got this one in October. Secondly, I'm pregnant and due in August and we just don't have it but we need a car. As stupid as it sounds, it seems cheaper to fix the car in sessions then to take out a loan to get another one. But since it's an 01 vehicle, I'm not sure it's worth it. We bought this car with the intention of keeping it at least 5 years but we've only had it 7 months. Ugh, I'm so torn. What should I do?

That will not just be the airbags you would have to replace. You will need to replace the airbags, control module, and seatbelts too. Insurance companies total vehicles because of the money needed to repair the SRS system after an accident. Your car is not worth repairing but if you have no cash just fix the vehicle so it drives… Don't do a thing to the SRS system. I'd get a quote or two just for the body and suspension work so you have an idea if another used vehicle is cheaper and the way to go.

If the insurance company didn't "total" your car, then you should have enough coverage to fix it (minus the deductible)

I would suggest you should…

It's OK to do a minimal amount of repairs to get it drivable again then maybe later think about the cosmetics and airbags.FYI, the entire airbag system can be purchased used from a salvage yard for a very reasonable price.

  • Airbags and car seat covers? So long story short i have tan car seats and bought some covers to protect them. Today I spilled pop all over the seat cover so i pulled it off to wash at home and I read do not use if car is equipped with side airbags. I'm not sure if my car has them or if i can continue using the cover. Its a 2014 Ford Focus. My mom has the exact same ones on her 2012 Honda Civic. Which airbags do these cars have?
  • Is it illegal to not have airbags in my truck? Ok my truck was manufactured without airbags. It was made in 1991-92. I know I can't put airbags in it, but is it illegal. I was told by one of my friends the acted like it was illegal, I also have a windgate on it and the acted like it was dangerous to have it. Also My sister is also arguing with me that my truck is made out of aluminum and not steel. Its a 92 ford f150 can someone debunk that.
  • I have a 2000 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4L and I have air lift airbags in the rear. I fill them up to 50-55psi? I put about 3,360lbs-3,800lbs in the bed sometimes. But very very little and very short distances. Just a question when ever the load is loaded the airbags squash down. How do they do that? Like where does the air go? They turn small. And when the load is off they go back. I'not just afraid they will pop or something.
  • Can I replace and instrument panel on a 2008 Ford Escape? I removed my instrument panel to determine what was causing my gauges and dashlights to turn off while driving. After removal it appesars the plug on the back is loose to the board. I don't know how to fix this, but was wondering if I could replace with a different panel myself or does a dealer need to program it?
