How to tell the difference between air being in the brake lines or needing to replace the master cylinder?
I have to push further down to stop my car. It's not that bad but I'm taking the car in Monday. I d rather be safe then sorry. When the car is stopped I pump the brakes and it stiffens but then if I push hard the pedal still goes down. It kinda feels like the pedal doesn't stiffen until 2/5 of the way down. There's still plenty of break fluid so it doesn't look like a leak… Model: 2004 Ford Escape.
That's the symptoms of a bad master cylinder.
If you step on the brakes and hold and then the pedal goes down further then you need a new master cylinder.

- What do I do when I need brake lines repaired? I have a 2001 ford focus and one of my rear metal brake lines cracked. I need a 3/16th in diameter and 14inches long metal brake line and can't find it in stores, at dealerships, online or anywhere. I've tried making my own but the flaring kit never works for me, id like to do it myself what do I do?
- Let the master cylinder run dry and now the brake pedal goes to the floor when I turn the car on. Is air still in the system? I pulled the car out of storage and i noteced the left front caliper was leaking so I replaced the caliper. The only problem was the master cylinder ran dry. I bleed the brakes three times. I did not see any air in the lines after I bleed them a third time. When the car is off the brake pedal gets rock hard when the pedal ia depressed about half way. With the car on the brake pedal goes to the floor. Would this be cause by air in the system? The car is a 03 ford focus.
