2001 ford escape? Good car? - 1

I'm 18/F, looking for a first car for myself. The history of cars I've driven include a 2000 Chevy Cavalier, a 2001Volvo s70, and a Hyundai Santa Fe from the early 2000s. I found a 2001 Ford Escape XLS that looks in good shape. It has 167,340 miles on it and the dealer is asking $4,700. It needs new rotors and one of the gaskets is out, but the dealer said he would have all of that fixed before it is bought. Are the earlier Ford Escapes good cars? Does it handle well? Does it have a lot of problems/ is it expensive to repair? What is a good price for this car?

Added (1). I have stated it is an XLS. It is a 2wd though

I have actually been driving for 4 years and none of those 3 cars are mine, they are family members' that I drove since I didn't have a car. We have all of them still except for the Cavalier which was involved in an accident, not due to me, but to a distracted 17 year old male high school student.

The 2001 Ford Escape is a fairly reliable vehicle that only has one moderate problem which is inexpensive to repair. Occasional problems on this vehicle are failure of the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) Sensor, ignition coils and boots (3.0L only), and engine wiring harnesses (3.0L only). These problems may cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate. The cost to repair the DPFE Sensor is estimated at $52.00 for parts and $32.50 for labor. The cost to repair the ignition coils and boots is estimated at $98.00 for parts and $32.50-$117.00 for labor depending on the coil(s) needing to be replaced. The cost to repair the engine wiring harness is estimated to range from $32.50-$130 for parts and labor. Other than these problems the vehicle is very reliable. You do not list if it is a 2wd or 4wd and if it is an XLS or XLT. Assuming it is an 2wd XLT the high retail value for a super nice one is $4,100. If it is a 4wd XLT then add $175. A price of $4,700 is way too much for this vehicle with this mileage. $3,750 is a more reasonable price and is all I would pay for this vehicle. After all this vehicle is 13 years old with high mileage.

The Ford Escape is a crossover SUV built of the same-year Ford Focus platform. The Escape has a reasonably good reputation for reliability. That truck has a lot of miles on it for a small CUV. I would not count on any more than 30K miles out of it before something lets go. As you say, it already has problems. I would want those repairs in writing, but still, I would not recommend you buy it, if he's willing to fix those issues, it could be because he suspects worse things are wrong and needs to unload it. It concerns me you have been driving 2 years or so and have had 3 cars. Are the all getting in accidents? Are you having incredibly bad luck with reliability? If not, I counsel you to consider sticking with one car as long as you can drive it while saving up for a better car the next time. If you are buying cars voluntarily more than once every 3-5 years, you are losing money.

ALl FORDS are great choices these days, a s FORD was not implicated in the bankruptcies that GM and CHRYSLER dealt with! They had more "ON THE BALL": in reality and better quality as well! The FORD engines are good for 300k miles and more usually, and same for the trannies. The right thing to do is to take it to a FORD DEALERSHIP and have all the fluids changed, even the BRAKE FLUID and especially the BRAKE FLUID! Have the STEERING FLUID and COOLANT changed as well! Use ONLY MOBIL ONE 0W-30 oil that is a full synthetic. Then get new BOSCH or DENSO iridium plugs installed and expect SMOOTHER running and longer oil change intervals as well as more power and economy! Spend $20-30 at any oil change place and have the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE removed and cleaned, as well as the THROTTLE BODY! This ritual will prevent most CEL lights from ever going on. The AIR/FUEL mixture in stop and go is adjusted by the IAC valve. Best economy occurs when the IAC is WHISTLE clean! All BRAKE FLUID decompose after about 3-4 yeas, and turns toxic and brown-ish> USE ONLY GENUINE FORD FLUIDS and not store bought generic junk fluids! IT will be WORTH IT as this vehicle will run trouble free for another 100k miles and maybe MORE! Use AMSOIL POWER FOAM to clean these sensors on your own.
