Anyone ever recharge their A/C before?

I have a 2005 ford focus. Okay so I don't really know anything about cars at all and have never attempted to do anything to my car. Lol so I bought an Artic Freeze synthetic A/C charge with the gauge included. I found the port to hook up to, which is ever so conveniently located on the front passenger side of the splash guard around the wheel. I literally took one screw off and bent the plastic down far enough to get to it. So I hooked the gauge up and it kept fluctuating from empty pretty much (white) to the red before I even added anything in. This scared me because I know it can easily be overcharged. So I added just a little and it began moving even more into the red but returning back to the white. Eventually it stopped fluctuating and resting on the edge of the white and green. And it got harder for me to pull the trigger on the charge can the more it went into the green. I don't know did I do something wrong? Is it broken if it was fluctuating before I even put anything in? Is it normal? I don't know. My A/C isn't really cold either. I mean its colder but not as cold as I would like. I didn't fill it all the way to where the pie shape was either according to the temp outside.

Added (1). Should I add more? Lol

There's to side to your a/c a high side and low side do it wrong and you can get hurt. But since you have try and your ok you work with low side it is the larges line on compressor port you need themontator to put air vent in side car turn on a/c to high cool with can hook ed up start car be sure line is clear and try shacking have some watch themontator try to get to 40 degrees. Now this not a job for some one with no working idea of system you can get hurt same quickly.

You did know the engine must be running with the air-conditioner at full cold running full blast.

Honestly, I woukd have took it to someone who has more skill in this area. The system you have runs on freon (R34).
-A little history, R34 came out in the mid 90s on all vehicles. Before this vehicles used R12. R 12 was burning a hole in the ozone and so it was banned basically. Which was better? Comfort wise it was R12 it would freeze you. Lets say around 30 to 40 degrees. R34 gets to a nice lets say around 60 degrees at. The coolest.
-Okay, so nice history lesson. Now that you know a little bit about it. R34 can be over filled. The whole systen also needs a type of oil to run. It also can have a leak some where. Which before a pro will put in any r34 they will check for leaks. A Auto Tech will pull all the freon out with a machine and put the right amount back in. Truth be told if you have less freon in the system it makes it feel a little cooler.
- I'm glad you tried it on your ownvevery need to but you need the knowledgr first(googke or youtube it!)

No, Leave it alone, Take it to a reputable mechanic that does A/C service. Being you have added freon there's no way of knowing how much is in the system and you may have added too much. The correct amount has to be in it to operate properly, too much or too little and it will not cool properly. The system will have to be evacuated and since you said you have added freon, if it was in fact low, you may have a leak. DO NOT try to work on this system yourself, an A/C system is a closed system and is under high pressures and if you try to open the system, it could result in serious injury and severe burns. Please… Let someone that is experienced in this field make any repairs that needs to be done.

Add more until its showing in the correct range and since it leaked out you will need to add Freon at least once a year maybe twice if you can't make it through the summer if the leak is bad enough.

look for oil film around the lines at connection points and if you see a dirty oil film (stain) then that is your leak.

as country boy mentioned be sure you have it set to max cool with the fan on high speed and windows open when charging the a/c so its not recycling cold air while you are charging it and its also helpful because you can reach in and feel the air so you know its good. The air should have an ice cold "wet" feel to it and its also best to have someone giving it a "little" gas so its revving about as it would while your going 40mph. This is how you should be reading the guage pressure and it should be fully on the higher side of the green
