How to talk down the price of a vehicle?

I saw someone selling their 1974 Ford F-250. It is in great shape by the looks of it and I'm in need of a pickup. He is selling it for $1700 and I only have $1000. The truck has been sitting in his yard for a good month. I'm assuming it's still there cause no calls were made, most likely cause where he lives is in a very dead area. This would be my first vehicle that I buy with my own money. Others I have inherited. Can anyone give me some tips on how to talk him down to my budget? Is it impossible to go that low?

You go and see the seller, slap him/her in the face with $500 and gtfo m8!

Your probly not gna get him to go that low, people now days low ball cars and flip them to make a profit, everyone knows that now days so he most likely won't sell it to you for that low maybe he will drop the price a little bit but never 700

1500 for a running truck no matter how old is about bottom dollar

Hope that it doesn't start because it's been sitting there for a little while. Other than that just try to point out everything wrong with it. All scratches, rust, dents, tears in seats, anything that makes it look different than when it was brand new. It's possible to talk him down that much. He may be very stubborn though so who knows.

If you only have $1,000, this is the not truck/car for you. A 40-year-old truck is going to require regular maintenance, and I'm assuming it has at least 200,000 miles. The trouble with the odometer on that truck is that it only reads 5 digits, so you will never know if it has 50k, 150k, 250k, or 350k miles.

If the purchase of this truck eats up all your available cash, it's going to have some expensive repair needed, and will soon be in your lawn not running.

$1700 for a four-decade-old truck is ridiculous, unless it is in great condition.
