How much horsepower does a truck need to pull 1,000 pounds of weight?
How much horsepower is required to pull 1,000 pounds? A dually can haul an extra 1,000 lbs because the two tires on each side at the back of the truck simulate wider tires. This is why I'm asking. My older brother wants to get a dually 2002 Ford F350 and we both know that dually trucks can pull 1,000 pounds more than a single wheel truck.
I have a 2010 F150 Crewcab with 5.4L and with towing package that is rated to tow just south of 12,000 lbs A 350 dually will put that number to shame… Page 19 in the source
I had a 1983 Subaru 4WD wagon rated to tow only 1000 lbs and towed some heavier trailers of firewood (just making sure that the tongue weight was not too much). Of course the car was 2050 lbs, so altogether a 1.8L engine with 73 horsepower was moving over 3000 lbs plus people and payload in the vehicle. So I'm guessing about 20 hp per 1000 lbs. Maybe less, because it depends upon speed and aerodynamics or whether trying to pull it up a steep grade.
One time while towing a 1000 lb pop-up tent camper, it was raining so hard that the front wheels started to spin and I had to use 4WD.
A thousand pounds is nothing.
Anything called a truck can tow 1,000 pounds. Heck my FWD Toyota hatchback is rated to tow 2800 lb.
Also, the tow capacity is determined more by the weight of the vehicle than it's power. Power only determines how fast it accelerates and how well it goes up hills. Those aren't safety issues, how well you can brake and steer with the weight on the back is the issue. So you can have little diesel trucks with not much over 100 hp, that are rated to tow 4 tons or so. OK they won't tow it very quickly, but they can at least do it safely.
Where as my much lighter car, with almost 300 hp is limited due to it's light weight Too much weight behind it and you can't steer or stop in am emergency, no matter how much power you have.
I've carried better than that in the back of a 4 banger Chevy Citation. ( about 120 HP) . I have bodily pushed a 3000 lb car half a mile. It's not a matter of horsepower so much as how fast do you want to move the load?
Basically any vehicle on the road can tow 1000 lbs.
