Yes you could, the 3/4 or overdrive clutches may be burnt.
Until they strip it down they can only guess what the problem is

If only 1-2 and no other shift then might need rebuilt. Is there a check engine light on? Might be a solenoid problem. Find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help
- Ford ranger trans lost reverse and 1st? I have a 1999 3.0 v6 automatic ranger. It does not go in to reverse or drive you have to put It into drive 2 and then when you get up to around 20 mph you can put it into normal drive and it works fine. Can I rebuild it.
