Ford ranger trans lost reverse and 1st?

I have a 1999 3.0 v6 automatic ranger. It does not go in to reverse or drive you have to put It into drive 2 and then when you get up to around 20 mph you can put it into normal drive and it works fine. Can I rebuild it. What kind of rebuild kit do I need. How much do you Think it'll cost. What kind of trans do I have. And what other kind of trans will fit in this truck. If I can't rebuild it

A4LD or A4LD-E.
I have seen alot of them get rebuilt.
It's one of the ones that is cost effective to repair,
Or at least it was then.
The trick is to make a list of all the failed parts within, price them.
Then get a price on a Fred Jones remanufactured one.
at least thats how it was last time I looked.
Ask for the most current info from your ford parts counter
in your area.
Transmission kits and special tools can be bought by anyone.
But diagnostics, schooling, and ability is all on the one who rebuilds it. What else fits? Ask a yard with a hollander interchange manual. Probably not good for a computer in a truck to try and fool it.
You could go have a chat with an independent trans shop and see where their numbers lie these days as well.

Well for tools you'll need. Snap ring pliers, bushing installers/removers, pump alignment tool, spring compressor, torque wrench foot and inch pound. Manual to walk you through end play and so forth. Kit with all frictions and steels along with bushings plus bands there's 3. Along with servos bushing kit. Transmission is a 4R44E. Plus the torque converter. Transtar1.com sell parts and the manual about 600 dollars in parts. Maybe more if you find some hard part wear which is a common problem with this transmission

Sounds like a failure in the Low/Reverse clutch.

How many automatic transmissions have you previously rebuilt? Clutch packs mostly operate the same, C-clips are C-clips, planetary gearsets are also pretty much the same. HOWEVER, many transmissions require special jigs and tools to get them set up right. How good are you at installing seals and reassembling the components without damaging those seals? Absolute cleanliness is VERY important then doing a trans overhaul! You can't even use red shop rags because that red lint will find its way into the valve body and screw the pooch in mysterious ways.

Does repairing it yourself still sound like a good idea?
