Could a worn out Cam shaft effect power?
My dad has a 2004 Ford. When it was new, it had 350 Brake horse power. I don't think its lost power but he thinks it has. It has 310,000 miles on it, he bought it brand new so its been taken car of. My question is can worn out cam lobes effect power? If the lobes are not as big anymore, this could cause the exhaust and intake valves to not open as much. Is this possible, or would a worn out cam just keep the engine from running? I think my idea could be possible. He says it feels like it only lost about 50 BHP, he thinks it just from the engine being old.
Worn cam lobes are more likely to cause the engine to run a bit rougher, noticeably so at idle. If the lobes were worn enough to effect the valve opening and closing times significantly so much metal would have gone through that engine that it would have far worse problems. Decreased power is most often caused by worn rings and cylinders, burned valves or worn valve seats.
Has a compression test been done? I would assume it is more of a general wear to loss of power. @310000 miles I'm sure it has lost power.
Yeah, way past time to retire that engine. Everything is worn, cams, piston rings, cylinder walls, bearings… The whole thing. If the truck itself is OK, no rust or collision damage, may be worth a 'factory refurbished engine', which as a relatively 'simple' remove and replace probably wouldn't be too bad, cost wise.
You are thinking of the old style flat tappet cams, which are no longer used. Then yes, when the lobes wore down, you loss power. In your case 2004, its just plain wore out & tired cylinder walls & rings.
Yes, but in an engine with THAT many miles, EVERYTHING is worn and causing power loss.
- Which Ford Racing cam is best for my 5.0? Building a 5.0 EFI, going cam, heads, throttle body, longtube headers and an o/r x pipe, Going to run nitrous but max 150 shot, out of the ford racing cams (b303, e303, etc.) Which would work best with my set up?
- Is anyone else growing tired of the worn out Ford Mustang? It seems like every couple of months there's another one. Come up with something completely new. Or bring back the Thunderbird. The Mustang is a chick car. These cars have no soul and no life in them period. Even the venerable Dodge and Chevy can't make a good car anymore.
- Ford 302 cam modification So i have a completely stock 302 out of a 1973 mustang that i'm swapping into another 1973 mustang. Other than a after market exhaust and a weinand intake with holley 600 or 650 (i don't know which, could find the code on google). I'm looking for a cam to use when i tear the engine down and rebuild. I'm gonna swap the heads to gt40 heads so what is gonna work with gt40 heads
- 2008 mustang gt cam installation? Ok so I have an 08 gt! 5 speed. Next week I will buy the ford racing hot rod cams. And when they are installed. Do I really need the bama hand held tuner to tune the car to the cams? Or can I also tune it on the dyno? I do have a diablo sport predator hand held tuner, but where and how do I buy a custom tune for the cams? And also when I called the shop they asked if i had an sct tuner. Which I don't i have the DS TUNER…
