Power Steering Gear Box or Pump?

I recently got a 1982 Ford Bronco and it is incredibly hard to turn right while it is completely fine turning left. I believe that its the gear box while my dad believes it is the pump. If it is the gear box or pump is it better to just replace it or rebuild?

Below is a link to a thread I found about a guy having big trouble with his Broncos steering. I't not exactly like your problem but if you'll read through it he gets some good advice on things to check out. In the end he replaced the pump with a re-manufactured unit and that fixed it.

I tend to agree with your dad that it's most likely the pump. Unless you're able to zero in on a joint or something in the linkage that is obviously binding then the pump would be my first choice to change out. It's likely the original pump and being over 30 years old makes it very suspicious in this situation in my opinion.

Here's the link to the thread I mentioned above http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-190910.html

Can you be more specific please?

  • Will a 2000 Ford Windstar lx fuse box diagram be the same as a 2003 Ford Windstar fuse box? I found a link about a 2003 but I need to know if it'll be the same for a 2000. If it ain't can anyone help me out with a link showing information like this but about a 2000 model? Thanks. http://www.fixya.com/cars/t11808484-2003_ford_windstar_fuse_box_diagram
  • If my power steering pump and pulley break, is there any other parts I may have to potentially replace? Last night when I was driving, my power steering pump busted and also broke my power steering pulley. I have a 2002 ford Taurus. In the process of the pulley breaking off, the serpentine belt came off. It is still on the car so I just have to re position it once the new pulley is on. My question is through this incident, could anything else have broken? I just did a bypass pulley for the AC compressor last week. And I also replaced the serpentine belt last week.
  • 1999 ford taurus gear box/power steering messed up? I started my car up and suddenly the power steering locked on me. The gears wouldn't change. I have power steering fluid in the car and the pump works fine. I had someone check it out and they said whenever I shift gears my engine rocks with it and it slips out of place somehow. Is it worth fixing/how much would it cost or should i just sell it?
  • Why does my power steering pump squal when I turn? I have checked the fluid and it fine… It is a 2000 ford ranger with 4.0 V6 engine. It has a 3 inch body life and oversize mud tires… Would large tires cause it to whine? Or do I need to just change my pump?
