After i tun off my car it ghost idles at higher RPM's for a very long time?
OK i have a 1960 Ford Ranchero with a 200ci i6 and after I tun the ignition off it still runs at its idle speed of about 600 rpm. So this isn't the normal definition of ghost idling that I've seen. The only way to kill the engine its to choke it or pull a plug on the ignition coil and I've let it go a good 20 min after turning it off. Any help is amazing, thanks!
We called it "run-on" in the day. But you're right - this is not normal run-on, which does not care about the ignition. You have a wiring short that is feeding power to the ignition circuit… That is the only possible reason for it caring whether you kill the ignition coil. Most likely causes are miswiring of the radio, so the constant 12V is backfeeding the ignition, or a bad ignition switch.
I agree with Flag. When you turn off the ignition switch you cut power to the coil so you are getting a back feed from something. The radio may be it or more likely something that has been wired in using a relay.
When you turn OFF a car with a carb, the throat plates are supposed to spring shut, cutting the air off to the engine & stopping it. Something in the carb, like in the linkage, isn't set-up right if those plates are staying open.
Oh I haven't seen this for a long long time,
Stil, a 60's car,
so it just might be carbon build up in the inlets/combustion chamber.
They glow red hot for quite a while and it's enough to ignite any fuel.
Doesn't actually idle,
more like you get when your running out of fuel,
kind of chug chug cough then die.
Reminds me of the time I was at a motor auction and there was this old Ford there for sale,
and you could just tell it had been roasted to get there.
There was a crowd of traders round the cars until this old Ford started up on it's own!
Well they scattered.
I kid you not,
you could feel the heat from the engine from 10 feet away!
Smell the fuel too.
Ah the good old days of carbs and carbon.
Oh and nobody bought the car,
Guess they thought it was haunted.
Might be you have a similar problem.
In that case a good old fashioned head de/coke will fix it.
- Why did Trump say of Dr. Ford: I thought her testimony was very compelling, looks like a very fine woman and was a very credible witness? I thought her testimony was very compelling, and she looks like a very fine woman to me. A very fine woman. It was incredible. It was an incredible moment, I think, in the history of our country. But certainly she was a very credible witness. She was very good in many respects. https://www.c-span.org/video/?452222-1/president-trump-reacts-calls-delaying-vote-kavanaugh-nomination
- When I start my truck my RPM's are very low (almost stalling) until I tap the gas? I'll start the truck and the RPMs will sometimes automatically go to below 1 then start dying out. I have to tap the gas quick and the RPM's will jump to around 3 then it will start the idle process. The truck runs fine otherwise I'm just concerned it might cause future problems. Is my throttle just getting stuck or something? 2003 Ford Ranger 2.3 4 Cyl Standard 160,000 Miles
- I have a Ford Ranger 4.0 and the AC doesn't blow very cool air. I want to add refrigerant for very 1st time, never have added to any vehicle? I'm using a gauge to test the pressure. With AC on max the needle moves between 25 and 45, the blue normal range. The compressor cuts on at 45 and off at 25. This happens continuously. The outside temp is 80 degrees. Not exactly understanding what I was doing, I added a little refrigerant and now the needle goes to 47 in the yellow range. Will this do any harm? Can I remove the excess refrigerant? If so, how? Is the system fully charged? If so, why isn't the air cooler?
- Ford Ranger 4.0, 172,000 miles rough idle when starting after sitting overnight or after 2-3 hours. Starts 1st crank, idles rough 1 minute? Or so and then smooths out and runs fine. New heads and gaskets. Cleaned MAF sensor, throttle body and air intake sensor, new IAC valve, new air and fuel filters, new PCV valve. No smoke coming from exhaust and No check engine light. Any ideas what's causing this rough idle?
