How will fender bender effect insurance for Teen?
So I live in a crowded neighborhood where almost everyone parks on a narrow street. Anyway I came home and this prius was in my normal spot and there was no other parking. So I decided to try and squeeze my car in between the prius and another. Long story short, I backed into the prius. Not hard, I heard a little *ting. I checked and there appears to be a small indent above their license plate. It's 4am so I haven't done anything about it yet. I'm 17 and female, I've been driving a year with no accidents or traffic violations. I only have liability insurance. I was wondering if we filled a claim. How would it affect my insurance? Specifically the rates?
PS. I drive a 1999 Ford ranger and have good student on insurance. ( in case that matters).
Now ask it in the right place. Only your agent / broker can give you that answer, the best you'll ever get in here is a wild guess.
Your broker will probably tell you, because you'll probably have to claim this through your policy. You hit a parked vehicle, so there's no dispute about who is responsible for the damage. And unlike 25 years ago, dented bumpers aren't repaired for fifty bucks. They used to be able to pull a dent and buff it out, but that was back when bumpers were made of this thing called steel. Steel was strong, thick and flexible, and it could be fixed when dented. Nowadays bumpers are all made of moulded plastic and foam filler, which can't really be fixed cheaply. They just replace the entire assembly, which can cost anywhere from $1500 to $5000 including parts and labour.
This accident most likely will affect your rates, but only your broker can say how much. It's pretty safe to assume you won't see a $5000 increase, but with so many details unknown (you only said 17 and 99 Ranger) it's impossible to even give an educated ballpark figure.
The general answer is yes, a claim will impact ( no pun intended ) your insurance rate. By how much is a question only your insurance company can answer for you.
But before you go that route, I strongly suggest leaving a note on the other car and speaking with the driver/owner. Paying for the damage out of pocket will very likely cost you less in the long run compared to the increase in your insurance rate resulting from an at-fault collision.
It may affect your rates, it may not affect your rates. ONLY your insurance company can answer your question. However! Why determine whether or not to report the damage you made based on "IF" your rates will be affected rather than doing the correct thing?
Geez!
"Your" parking spot?
To Jay P: A claim will not "impact" rates but rather it may "affect" rates. If rates are "affected", it will then be said to have had an "effect". No matter how many wannabes misuse the word "impact", it is still wrong to use it as you did,. An "impact" used to be a collision, is still a collision and will always be a collision.
Grammar matters.
What is a seventeen year old doing getting home at four in the morning? Why do you have "only" liability" insurance? Sorry but this is serious business. Suppose you were parked in this "normal spot" and your reckless neighbor, a drunk, came one night at 4:00 AM and crushed your car? He, or she, has no license due to being suspended for DUI's and, of course, no insurance. No witnesses and he, or she, just drives away. What then?
- What's the best car for a new teen driver? I'm going to be getting my first car pretty soon and I was wondering what kind of car would be best for a 16 year old girl! I'm not too picky on the model and I just wanted to know what would be best, most affordable choice for me right now.
- Best kind of car for teen? Right now i have a 2000 ford taurus and it has gotten so much work into it everything is brand new but i'm getting tired of fixing it. I was thinking of buying a pontiac g6. But i was wondering if there are any other cars that are better for around $4000
- Small SUV for teen driver? I'm only 15 now, but my mom told me I should start researching cars and SUVs. We have agreed on Nissan Rouges, Subaru Foresters, and Toyota RAV4s (possibly Honda CRVs) NO OLDER THAN 2009… My mom drives a Subaru and really wants me to get the Forester. The problem is, Foresters are more expensive than any of the others. They are all about the same size, same mpg. What would you recommend of the four? Which is the best for a new driver? Any other suggestions? (No ford, Chevy, jeep, etc.)
- Nice cars for teen around 7,000 or lower? Fairly large cars, preferred brands, jeep, ford, hummer, ram, manly cars lol. Please give me your suggestions. And for date wise nothing below 2009.
