Overdrive in Ford F-150 on icy roads?

Does over drive need to be OFF or ON on icy road conditions? I've had it on (I've never turned it off) and my truck slips and slides all over the place so I was wondering if turning my overdrive off will help anything.

Why not invest in better tires.

Snow/I've tires make a world of difference.

Uhh, why wouldn't you try it and see if it helps?

Overdrive should be on, unless you are towing a heavy load or on a steep hill and need the extra power on lower speed. All other times, it should be left ON. It has nothing to do with performance or control on icy road conditions. In fact, 4WD is more harmful in slick road conditions, it was meant for uneven dry, dirt, mud, grass, gravel not rain, ice, sleet and snow.

  • Overdrive on a my 95 Ford thunderbird? I have a 95 Ford thunderbird… The question is, what is the overdrive for… I know on trucks its used to pull trailers and go up steep inclines but I don't know why I have the option to use it or not on my Tbird. And what will happen if its on? Its the V6 3.8.
  • Why is my overdrive not working? I have a pretty old mustang it's ford mustang 2000 with 194k miles and when i turn the car on I assume it's on since the OD off light doesn't show up, but when I drive it doesn't go passed 40MPH, but when I turn it off, it goes way faster. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? This just happened out of know where.
