Under/overdrive problems?

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger that is shifting okay in overdrive but not in under. The light is not on. We have already checked filter. Can any one help me please?

I'm not sure what you're try to say. Overdrive is simply 5th gear in your case. There's no "overdrive mode" or anything. All the button on the gear shifter does is lock out 5th gear, it doesn't effect the way the transmission shifts.

Over drive is nothing more than the highest gearing in the transmission for use in higher speed cruising. There are no other shifts when in overdrive its just the highest gear available. If your truck isn't shifting through the lower gears you have a problem with the transmission. Ford recommends that the selector stay in the OD position for most driving except when towing or climbing steep grades so if yours is operating correctly when OD is selected doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with the possible exception of the indicator light may be faulty.

  • When should you use overdrive on a truck? My friend just got a 2000 Ford Ranger and we noticed a button that said O/D. We were wondering what that was and when it is required to be used.
  • Shifting problems and intake problems? I drive a 1997 ford ranger with a 2.3l automatic. I have recently experienced a hard shifting in my truck even when I'm not on the gas it has problems shifting. And I cleaned my air filter and filter hose that goes to my throttle body and there was transmission fluid in the hose. What can be causing this and how can I fix it or how much will it cost roughly?
  • Overdrive on a my 95 Ford thunderbird? I have a 95 Ford thunderbird… The question is, what is the overdrive for… I know on trucks its used to pull trailers and go up steep inclines but I don't know why I have the option to use it or not on my Tbird. And what will happen if its on? Its the V6 3.8.
  • Why is my overdrive not working? I have a pretty old mustang it's ford mustang 2000 with 194k miles and when i turn the car on I assume it's on since the OD off light doesn't show up, but when I drive it doesn't go passed 40MPH, but when I turn it off, it goes way faster. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? This just happened out of know where.
