Why do Psychology graduates struggle to find work in the USA when the public sector is a key employer?

Given the high crime rate, can't they get jobs as Forensic or Clinical Psychologists in the Department of Corrections, various police departments or hospitals around the country?

Occupational Psychology is also in demand by key private companies such as Ford, Coca Cola, UPS, Chevron and South West Airlines.

Is one possible reason lack of interstate or regional mobility, that most people in Chicago would not apply and go after a job in Dallas?

Most psychologists see themselves as having a private practice where they're the chief and answer to no one. They don't want a 'job.'

Because the government doesn't believe in your profession. (And who can blame them?)

Health insurance companies, hospitals and managed care organizations try to save money by not hiring psychologists to treat patients. Many patients go without treatment as a result.

I wonder too.

Psychology is neither a legitimate science nor a career.

Because we have glut of psych grads and the public sector can't afford to employ them all. In all your concerns about US hiring practices and public policy you seem not to know that 63% of every dollar we pay in tax goes to the military. This doesn't leave a lot left for the kind of robust social safety systems European countries enjoy (precisely because the US is covering their butts military in NATO). Maybe if EU countries started paying more for their militaries the US could do something about the rampant mental illness, crime and homelessness we have here. Heck, we might even be able to afford universal healthcare.
